When I Dream of You, I Dream of Clouds

2021 - 2022

Inspired by an abandoned box of old film slides, When I Dream of You, I Dream of Clouds is a Polaroid colour series exploring the ephemeral nature of memory.

Memory is defined as ‘the encoding, storage and retrieval of information and past experiences’ (Britannica). I prefer one of the less common interpretations: ’memory is an image or impression of one that is remembered’ (Merriam-Webster). I believe memory to be dynamic and the act of remembering personal, and at times fantastical. So, I ask myself: what makes a place or an object special, memorable?

Polaroids are inherently unique and ever-changing. Their colours develop for days after an image has been taken. They are sensitive to light and heat. If not stored properly, they deteriorate fast. Just like memories, they are fragile and evolve over time. With Dublin as a backdrop, single frame images and double exposures come together to create a vibrant time-traveling tableaux in which past and present collide, blending reality and fantasy into the city’s landscapes.
